B. (20m)

   ·   Write on the board:

By 717 AD. Islam had reached the boarders of Europe.

In Hamad youth, they listened to stories. These had hardly changed for centuries.

   ·   Ask, What are the verbs in these sentences? had reached, had changed and listened.

   ·   Say: The 1st two verbs are called past perfect which is had + past participle

   ·   past perfect: is used to describe something that happened before something else in the past.

   ·   Draw a time and write:

had reached              717 AD                  now

   ·   Point to the time and ask: What happened here? Islam reached  the boarders of Europe.

   ·   Say: When one thing happened in the past before another thing in the past, we can say that the first thing had happened before the second thing. So Islam had reached the Europe before 717 AD.

 

   ·   Erase the words under the time line and write:

   ·   Read the second example: In Hamad’s youth .......Say: A( They listened ...) B these had hardly changed)

   ·   Open PB/P38, read the title, S read part #1, S answer the Q’s there...

   ·   Open PB/P32, Write on the board :

Hamad’s youth

   ·   S read the 1st 3 sentences. Ask: Can we use these sentences to make notes about Hamad’s youth? No

   ·   Look at the 4th sentence then ask the same question. The answer will be: Yes.    lived in village

   ·   Do the same with the rest and the board will be as:

     lived in village     looked after father’s sheep       rarely traveled      lived in traditional house    

     fetched water from well     cooked on open fire     used oil lamps     did not have formal schooling

     learned farming by observing    mother made remedies      listened to stories

   ·   Say, Imagine that I am Hamad and you want to find out about my youth, try to use these notes. The Q’s will be: Where did you live in your youth?/ What did you do when you were a child?/ Where did you go?/ What kind of house did you live in?/ Where did you get water from?/ What did you cook on?/ How did you see at night?/ Did you go to school?/ How did you learn your job?/ What happened when you were sick?/ How did you entertain yourselves?

   ·   Open WB/P34, read the ins’s,..... ask a S about his youth. S ask someone who is older than 50 years

      or about a person’s father.
